I'm not the biggest fan of video games, but from time to time, the games I enjoyed as a kid can be quite relaxing when I have an hour to kill on the weekend. In our house, we have an X-box 360, and the only games I play these days are the arcade games available in retro collections. Dig Dug, Pacman and Galaga are the only ones that are any good that are available to me right now, but there is one Nintendo game that isn't available that I really wish I could get my hands on--Zanac. I only beat the game once, about five years ago when we busted out the old Nintendo that reverted to its original owner.

I would like to fly that little ship into battle one more time. Until that day comes, I can still watch others play on YouTube. There's an online version, but it's not the same without the controller, and right now it doesn't seem to be working.

Everyone who loves John Lennon should check out his "official website."
I don't care for the notion of official websites--and although I respect Yoko Ono, I don't give a damn what she thinks of John's art (however I am interested in hers)--but at least for the quotes by John, this is a wonderful site. Lennon had the habit of writing on napkins and paper bags and such. You will find great quotes from him on the home page. They are truly fascinating. But set aside some time for this because once you start you won't want to stop.

"You don't need anybody to tell you who you are or what you are, you are who you are!"

PS: I don't care about Yoko's opinion of John's art because when she met him she hadn't any knowledge of it, just like Heather Mills when she met Paul. I can't respect that. But at least Yoko is an intriguing artist in her own right.

Beatles LP Countdown - All You Need Is Love

Magical Mystery Tour has not been rated very highly as a Beatles album, but for sheer content this is a mistake. It has so many great songs! Here is a list of what I consider to be some of the best work of the Beatles, from this album.

It should be noted that much of the stuff on Magical Mystery Tour could have been released on Sgt. Peppers--that's how much great material the Beatles had at the time. Likewise, the Beatles double "White Album" (The Beatles) could have added another year to the life of the band, but alas, that was not to be. Anyway, "All You Need Is Love" is a fitting conclusion to a great album, and the song is one of my favorites.

"All You Need Is Love" is often lampooned by punkers and conservatives alike for being overly sentimental and not realistic. Well, this is bullshit! What Lennon is saying is that love is essential to any enterprise. There can be no courage, for instance, where there is no love.

Where else should we begin?

PS: We departed from our policy of using the British albums as the standard for the Beatles LP Countdown, because Magical Mystery Tour was an extended playing vinyl record in the UK, not an LP--sort of like a large 45 rpm disc, or something, I don't know. I never saw one.
