The Uncluded - TV on 10

by Jay Allbritton
Kimya Dawson teamed up with rapper Aesop Rock to form The Uncluded. This song is the strongest yet from the duo. I'm digging the trend towards Lyrics videos and this one is presented well.

Tegan and Sara - I Was A Fool

by Jay Allbritton
Sometimes on their new material Tegan and Sara don't even sound like Tegan and Sara, but they do sound great. It's an impressive feat. Usually the core of what made their sound so good to begin with is still there, but not much on this track.

The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight

by Jay Allbritton
The Postal Service managed to actually exceed expectations on Saturday night in their prime Coachella slot. I watched via YouTube stream. So far all the uploads of the full set get yanked from YouTube with a quickness, so, for now at least, all that remains are the clips posted on the festival's website.

You can see "A Tattered Line of String" here.

Postal Service - Nothing Better

by Jay Allbritton
The Postal Service kicked off their tour earlier this week. Last night they played Davis, California, and much of the show has turned up on YouTube. In this clip, Jenny Lewis sings the part Jen Wood sang on the band's 2003 record Give Up.

Lewis and Gibbard duets would be a great way to move the band forward, but seeing as how it took them ten years to embark on their second tour, I won't hold my breath.

KCRW Features Rilo Kiley's "Bury, Bury Another"

by Jay Allbritton
Santa Monica's public radio station KCRW is currently featuring "Bury, Bury Another" by @RiloKiley. The song is from their just released rarities collection RKives. They also have the MP3 available for free download. Based on the the country twang and the slide guitar, the song sounds like it could have been recorded for More Adventurous or for a scrapped EP the band had planned around that time.

This is a Rilo rarity that did not turn up on RKives, the very dark and very amazing, "Jenny, You're Barely Alive."

Elliott Smith - Independence Day

Wavves - Afraid of Heights

Wavves just put out a new video from their new album Afraid of Heights. Jenny lewis sings backup, which gets out attention. Not a bad tune, which Spin writer Marc Hogan notes is a bit Weezer-y.

RKives Will Get You There

by Jay Allbritton
I may or may not have been the recipient of an early copy of @RiloKiley 's RKives collection which is out on Tuesday. I will stipulate that I have purchased said collection via Amazon and advise all of you to do the same, for it is magnificent. Or, even better, get it directly from the band's label, which is run by the band's bass player Pierre.

I was quite pleased that the band retweeted my answer to the question which is my favorite jam. This is one of them. I couldn't chose just one. The record is stacked.

Here's my short gushing fanboy review: The first section is mostly songs that have not been heard by the superfans. The second part is mostly songs that were released as b-sides. I'm not entirely sure, but some of the mixes sound better or maybe there was some remastering. The songs sequence flows well despite the likely attempt to create a chronological coherence. There's a hidden track that sounds like it comes from the early days of the band. Hopefully the liner notes will shed more light on the process.

The Ups and Downs of 3D Printing

by Jay Allbritton
Reuters reports that a team of researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh have printed human embryonic stem cells with a 3D printer.

Meanwhile, NPR reports that "Defense Distributed, an organization best known for advocating open-sourced 3-D printing of guns, says its founder, Cody Wilson, is now a federally licensed gun manufacturer and dealer."

If InTrade hadn't gone under they could have laid odds on when the first person would receive an organ transplant from a 3D printer after being shot by a gun from a 3D printer. The race is on.

The Postal Service - Turn Around

by Jay Allbritton
This is the last as yet unheard Postal Service song. It was recorded along with "A Line of Tattered String," in 2006.

America's Greatest Hits

by Hector Diego

April Perkins - Silver Lining (Rilo Kiley cover)

by Jay Allbritton
Exquisite cover right out of the "Silver Lining" playbook. I'm especially impressed with the hot finger-picking goodness from the super-stoic guitar player. Way to go bro. Shred of the week and did not break a sweat.

Lewis Watson and Gabrielle Aplin - Droplets

Also recommend Watson's cover of Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". Welcome to your life.

The Elected - Response to Greed

by Jay Allbritton
One of the frustrating things about being a superfan of The Elected is that they have very little quality live footage online, so I was excited when a random check on YouTube turned up this clip from May 17, 2011, which had been posted only four hours ago. Of late I feel like I'm at the center of some paranormal vortex that is helping me recalibrate my entire existence, and few good tunes thrown in the mix along the way is also nice. Thanks universe!

Rilo Kiley - Let Me Back In

A while back Rilo Kiley asked their fans to send in footage for the video for "Let Me Back In". They edited that footage together and made this magical bit of nostalgia.

Jenny Lewis Cameos on New Wavves Album

Wavves has a very good new album out next week called Afraid of Heights. I know how good it is because it's streaming on NPR's website. This bonus track features backing vocals from Jenny Lewis who stopped by the studio to bring the boys a snack.

Dude, uh, Tomorrow's Already the Tenth

by Jay Allbritton
Last week was the 15th anniversary of one of my favorite movies, The Big Lebowski, so here's a mini Lighning Round dedicated to the memory of Theodore Donald Karabotsos.
  • While you're waiting on new shit to come to light about when Lebowski Fest is coming to your neck of the woods, check out Will Russell's list of the "Top Five Most Exciting Lebowski Fest Moments" over at LAWeekly
  • If they get your 8-track, there's always Chipocrite's 8-bit version of "Tumbling Tumbleweeds."
  • Apparently Sandy Koufax is a real reactionary
  • One of the men who inspired Walter Sobchak, Mr. John Milius, has a documentary coming out about him. He's known as the man behind the Dirty Harry franchise, Apocalypse Now and Conan the Barbarian. Not exactly a lightweight.
  • EW's PopWatch blog has "15 clips, parodies, and what-have-you" to help celebrate 15 years of the dude takin' 'er easy for all us sinners.
  • Josh Gondelman at Vulture has 15 thoughts on the 15th anniversary of the film.
Usually I don't blog on Shabbos, but since this is an emergency, and tomorrow is already the the tenth, I'll make an exception.

Revolution Number Nine

by Hector Diego
I once had a fellow graduate student as a friend, he was from Nepal. He told me he had never heard the Beatles. I realized he might not ever again, either, so my male intuition told me to play Revolution Number Nine. I guess I'm kind of a waskaly-waskal.

Ranking Rilo Kiley

by Jay Allbritton
Warren Miller over at Stereogum has a nice overview of Rilo Kiley's career, including a top 10 list of RK songs. While my list differs from his, I am very impressed at his understanding of such a widely misunderstood band.

Here's my list, off the top of my head:

10. Science vs. Romance
9. Pictures of Success
8. Does He Love You?
7. Jenny You’re Barely Alive
6. With Arms Outstretched
5. Ripchord
4. The Absence of God
3. A Man/Me/Then Jim
2. The Good That Won't Come Out
1. A Better Son/Daughter

Here's one that's not on the list, but is getting played nonstop on my iPod. It's a live version of an absolute gem called "Room 8" that the band never recorded.

Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter

by Jay Allbritton

Pearl Jam's Ten Goes over 10 Million Sold in U.S.

Pearl Jam's 1991 debut Ten just went over 10 million sold in the U.S.

Hard to say which song is my favorite from that great album, but today I want to hear "Release."

This cover was performed live last month at Little Notes in New York.

The Girls - Rich Girl

by Jay Allbritton
Alison Brie has the temerity to be in two of my all time favorite shows--Community and Mad Men. Then, last night on The Daily Show she mentioned that she's singing in a cover band called The Girls. So you know I'm all over that.

This was the first thing by The Girls that I found on YouTube. I apologize for the infrared camera this was filmed with. Apparently there were some kind of war games taking place at Meltdown Comics in L.A.

Hear New Old Rilo Kiley Song "Let Me Back In" From Forthcoming Album RKives

by Jay Allbritton
Spin has it.

The band played a version of it on Austin City Limits back in 2005. There's tap dancing on it, also strings and bass. It's a very auspicious beginning to this process, which culminates in the April 2 release of RKives.

This performance is from the 2007-2008 tour, probably at one of the Southern California shows.

Daughter - Youth

by Jay Allbritton
Back in 2011, Daughter played the song "Youth" live for The Amazing Sessions on Amazing Radio. It's a bleak assessment of love that comes right out and says what most other songs only hint at.

The great old blog You Ain't No Picasso has the studio version.

Rilo Kiley B-Sides Collection RKives Track List Released

by Jay Allbritton
In an interview in 2011 with Spinner, Blake Sennett said this about a Rilo Kiley rarities collection, "I think we're going to try and release a two-disc set of 40 songs, or something. I think that can be more considered like our last release, to me. But I don't know."

The prospect of 40 songs was exciting, but any fanboy would have to be a fool to believe that such a wonderful thing could exist in this life. So, when I saw the tracklist for the vinyl, titled RKives, which is posted on Amazon, I wasn't the least bit surprised to see that there are only 16 tracks.

Here's they are:

1. Let Me Back In
2. It'll Get You There
3. Runnin' Around
4. All the Drugs
5. Bury, Bury, Bury Another
6. Well, You Left
7. Draggin Around
8. I Remember you
9. Dejalo (Zondo Remix Featuring Too $hort)
10. A Town Called Luckey
11. Emotional
12. American Wife
13. Patiently
14. Rest of my Life (demo)
15. About the Moon
16. The Frug

Of these, only six are songs that the RK fan community doesn't already know. "Let Me Back In" is most definitely the beloved track formerly known as "I Love LA," which the band played on their Austin City Limits appearance.

Tracks 2-6 and 8 are unheard. The demo version of the Sennett-fronted "Rest of My Life" is intriguing to be sure. The inclusion of any version of "Dejalo," is frustrating, but I must admit that I am curious to hear rapper and Lewis favorite Too Short's contribution.

The songs that are missing include proper studio versions of fan favorites from live sets--"Pull Me In Tighter" and "Room 8". Those remain the twin white whales of my music collection. It's also curious that one of the great RK b-sides, "Jenny, You're Barely Alive," from the Saddle Creek 50 compilation is nowhere to be found.

"Draggin' Around," "A Town Called Luckey," "Emotional," "American Wife," "Patiently," and "About the Moon" are all fine songs that most hard core fans gathered long ago. "The Frug" earned the band early air time on MTV and gives the record an early touchstone, but it is essentially a wasted spot.

What is so frustrating is the unshakable feeling that this is just the tip of the iceberg, but considering the state of the band, broken up or not, this is probably all we're going to get. Ever. Nevertheless, I will gladly take it and hope for the best.

Here's another one left off--"Xmas Cake"

The Postal Service Tour Dates Announced

by Jay Allbritton
Guess who's not happy. ME. I knew that a Florida show was against the odds, but they have only one show in this time zone, and it's in New York City. Doesn't look like I'm going to be able to make that one.

Making matters worse, Jenny Lewis is confirmed for the tour. Hopefully this whole deal winds up on YouTube or, even better, commercially released at some point.

UPDATE: Ben Gibbard tweets that more dates are coming. Good to know.

by Jay Allbritton
NPR posted this overpowering performance of what I consider to be one the finest songs ever written, "This Year" by The Mountain Goats.

First Aid Kit - Kathy's Song (Paul Simon Cover)

by Jay Allbritton
Not many could pull off a cover of this masterpiece. (h/t TwentyFourBit)

by Hector Diego

Give it away!

Ed Sheeran - Wonderwall

by Jay Allbritton
Ed covers one of my guilty pleasures. I recently heard Dave Grohl on Maron's podcast make the argument that there's no such thing as a guilty pleasure. I would like to hear more about that from him, because liking Oasis songs does make me feel guilty. And I like several of them. It's bad you guys.

Swear and Shake - These White Walls

by Jay Allbritton
My first taste of this promising group (h/t YANP). One taste is enough; I'm buying this album.

Elliott Smith - Between the Bars

by Jay Allbritton
"...images stuck in your head..."

George Harrison Tribute

by Hector Diego

I like how the young women sing and play "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

Lucinda Williams - Lake Charles

The great Lucinda Williams is the guest on today's episode of WTF with Marc Maron.

by Jay Allbritton
Ed Sheeran does wonderful covers.

Black Prairie - Live on KEXP

by Jay Allbritton

For more Black Prairie, head over to NPR's Tiny Desk.

Wild Flag - Glass Tambourine

by Hector Diego

If we're going to post "Green Tambourine", then it is only right that we hear from Wild Flag.

Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine

by Hector Diego
I owned the single, or my brother did. Must have been my brother because I saved all my money for Beatles records. I considered 45s to be a rip off, so I always held out for albums.

Left Banke - Walk Away Renee

by Hector Diego

A beautiful melody.

Four Tops - Shadows Of Love

by Hector Diego

Parts of this song sound like 'I'll Be There', but that's OK. Anyone who has never been heartbroken has not stood in the shadows of love. The rest of us have been there.

Jess Delgado - Pumped Up Kicks

by Jay Allbritton
When Jess Delgado takes over the music industry, and she's going to, I hope it still sounds this good. Sometimes that DIY excellence turns into a syrupy pop sheen when the uber-producers get in the mix.

Animals - Sky Pilot

by Hector Diego

I am currently reading the conclusion of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time Series, A Memory of Light...the Last Battle.

Little Red Riding Hood

by Hector Diego

Ain't this the truth...

AJ Rafael and Jess Delgado - Such Great Heights

by Jay Allbritton
Fabulous cover that I found because I am psyched about the upcoming Postal Service reunion. These kids know how to bust out some harmonies.

The Like - Wishing He Was Dead

by Jay Allbritton
Since JJAMZ formed, I have become increasingly enamored with singer Z Berg. This is her previous band, The Like. I'm not sure how representative this is of their sound.

The Postal Service to Reunite at Coachella, Reissue Give Up

by Jay Allbritton
Ten years after releasing their only album, 2003's Give Up, The Postal Service have announced that they are reuniting for the Coachella festival and other tour dates yet to be announced. They will be reissuing Give Up with a bonus material featuring b-sides, remixes and covers of their music by Iron & Wine and The Shins. The collection will also feature two new songs.

No official word on whether Jenny Lewis will be part of the reunion, but she was a big part of the band's live shows in the past and she recently told Billboard's Phil Gallo, "I have a spring tour I can't talk today about with one of my bands. You'll know soon enough."

Here's a fan video of their live set from what may very well have been The Sasquatch Music Festival in 2004.

Tegan and Sara - Now I'm All Messed Up

by Jay Allbritton
New song from T&S (h/t Stereogum). Kinda digging the courageous move they made to redefine their sound this far into a successful career. Electro-pop isn't really my thing, but they do it well and in a way that's true to their voices as songwriters.

Isaac Graham - No Children (Mountain Goats Cover)

by Jay Allbritton
Sound Cloud is turning out to be a great place to find good covers if you're willing to sift through some bad ones. I only hope my ears will forgive what I put them through to find this one.

Bob Dobbs - Church Of The Subgenius

by Hector Diego

If you ain't got slack, you ain't got Jack.

Bleeding Rainbow - Drift Away

by Jay Allbritton
Dave Grohl mentioned this band on the latest episode of WTF with Marc Maron. He likes them. He is correct.

Breck Alan - The Good The Won't Come Out (Rilo Kiley Cover)

by Jay Allbritton
Took a lot of digging, but I found a very good RK cover on Soundcloud.

Blitzkriegbrenna - Pretty (Ugly Before) (Elliott Smith Cover)

by Jay Allbritton
In their one and only appearance on Sound Cloud, this mysterious band lays down a pretty banging E. Smith cover.

Rilo Kiley - My Slumbering Heart

by Hector Diego

It just feels good, Jenny says.

Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry, Be Happy

by Hector Diego

Let's remember this wisdom.

Haim - Falling

by Jay Allbritton
This band is gonna be huge. Just a feeling.

Ben Gibbard - Bigger Than Love (w Aimee Mann)

by Jay Allbritton
The great Aimee Mann joined the pretty good Ben Gibbard on The Colbert Report to play "Bigger Than Love" off his new album. Among the musicians filling out the band is none other than Ted Leo! Good song too.

Moody Blues - Candle Of Life

by Hector Diego

If you ever feel hopeless, try listening to "Candle Of Life."

Rilo Kiley's "Does He Love You" featured on American Songwriter

by Jay Allbritton
Jim Beviglia breaks down RK's "Does He Love You" over at American Songwriter.

The album was included by Elvis Costello on his list of Music You Should Hear back when it came out. "'Does He Love You?'," he wrote, "is the finest and most touching telling of a short story that you are likely to hear all year."

The Like - Don't Make a Sound

by Jay Allbritton
Nice retro vibe to this one. I'm convinced, time to buy some The Like records.

Beautiful recitation of the famous mantra om mani padme hum. Very beautiful.

The Beatles 1

For anyone unfamiliar with the Beatles--and I know you are out there somewhere--here is a convenient way to follow their career. Surely there must be something in this album for you.

Au Revoir Simone - Knight of Wands

by Jay Allbritton
From Studio Q, circa 2009. According to the Vegan of Brooklyn, they should have a new album out this year.

The band's name comes from this poignant scene from Peewee's Big Adventure. The bike, I'm sure, is a metaphor.

Lalena

by Hector Diego

Donovan wrote "Lalena." Which version is better, Station Agent?

Juliana Richer - Slow Love

by Jay Allbritton
Excellent song Juliana posted in November.

Soundgarden - Mind Riot

by Jay Allbritton
In retrospect, this deep cut off the band's unfortunately titled 1991 album Badmotorfinger may be their best song.

In light of police militarization, the line, "And the police said this was normal control," seems more pertinent now than when the song came out.

Maria McKee - If Love Is A Red Dress (Hang Me In Rags)

by Jay Allbritton
In this interview with Spin, comedian Marc Maron says, "When my second marriage fell apart there was definitely some music that helped me out. There's something about listening to music that's moving and sad that enables you to focus the sort of hopeless feelings that you have and carries you through them. I found myself listening to that Maria McKee song, 'If Love Is A Red Dress (Hang Me In Rags)'." So here it is.

Apparently it was on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.

B.J. Thomas - Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head

by Hector Diego

This song is quite unusual. At the very end, a completely new melodic theme, which could stand as a separate song by itself, is introduced. Quite unusual, that.

U2 - A Sort Of Homecoming

by Jay Allbritton
This song is one of my favorites by U2. Oddly, I only really dig U2 when it's cold. They just strike me as a winter band and this is a winter song.

Rilo Kiley - Jenny You're Barely Alive

by Jay Allbritton
The reason Rilo Kiley's forthcoming archival project is one of my most anticipated releases of 2013, is because RK is infamous for leaving amazing songs off their records. Like this one.

Elliott Smith - In the Lost and Found

by Jay Allbritton
"Stay with me, hanging around in the lost and found..."

Allied Radio - Mailing It In

by Jay Allbritton
My friend Jason Edwards and I wrote a couple of albums in 2007 and recorded them with our good friends in South Florida. Those records are available on Amazon.com and on various other digital formats. Recently we have been using this song as theme music for our podcast of the same name. We're 40 episodes in! Check it out here or over at iTunes.

You decide if this is a compilation of Joy Division's best work.

You Forgot Something

by Jay Allbritton
New York Republican Peter King has long been one of my least favorite members of Congress, which puts him in the running for least favorite person. He's no Scalia or Cheney, but the man does his damage to be sure. That's why his resounding freakout over Speaker Boehner adjourning the House last night without voting on relief funding for victims of Hurricane Sandy was so shocking in its plea for humanity from ghoulish hacks.

Dresses - Blew My Mind

by Jay Allbritton
Some delightful pop from promising new band Dresses(h/t YANP). More please.
