by Jay Allbritton
"As we pass over on the arc of time..."

Happy New Year, people.

2012 The Year Of John Lennon Ends

by Hector Diego

On January 1, 2012, I determined to post music by Lennon or featuring Lennon every day of the year, because people were saying that the world was going to end in 2012. I figured that if I played Lennon, either the world would not end or at least we would be hearing good music while it did. I managed to do this most days, and it has been a lot of fun.

Happy New Year, Walrus, wherever you are.

The Replacements - Androgynous

My friend Kevin plays a mean cover version of this great song. Glad I have so many friends that turn me on to great music.

Beatles' Fourth Ed Sullivan Show

by Hector Diego

This post will serve as one of the last posts for 2012-The Year of John Lennon, because some folks have claimed that the world would end. We've almost made it, listening to the Beatles!

New Rilo Kiley Album?

by Jay Allbritton
On Facebook, 11 hours ago, Rilo Kiley posted this message:
Record is almost finished, and artwork is nearly done. Going to need your help! More to come
This would imply that a new album is coming not just some b-sides collection. While I want the b-sides collection very badly, a new album would be way better news, because that would likely mean an extensive tour was in the offing.

RK Album Watch 2012-13 begins now.

And what do they mean "need your help"? I would be happy to help. I'm a helpful person and this sounds important!

UPDATE: This just in re:

Ave Maria

by Hector Diego

For millions of years the Pacific Ocean has lapped the shores of what we now call San Diego, California.

The Europeans came, then the surfers came, and stayed.

Fiona Apple - Dull Tool

by Jay Allbritton
From the new Judd Apatow film This Is 40.

Seven years between records and yet she can toss off this gem on some random Apatow film. Okay.  That's fine.

Joy Division - Live Transmission

by Hector Diego

Dance, dance, dance to the radio! My daughters are wearing this record out.

Russell Brand Interviews Members of the Westboro Baptist Church

by Jay Allbritton
If you have never heard of the Westboro Baptist Church, that's probably a good thing. They're super intolerant, you guys. They have recently threatened to protest the funerals of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre. As a result they now have problems with Anonymous that could carry on for awhile.

In this clip, two of members of the WBC stepped into the realm of Russell Brand. He patiently attempted to talk to them while they called him a pimp and explained why he and the audience all hated one another and were going to hell. It was pretty pointless. These people have nothing to say.

Obviously, the best thing to do is ignore them, which I have failed to do simply by making this post. It's also hard to ignore them when they go up to places where people are mourning the dead and they make a disturbance and try to start pushing people's buttons.

They also do not give a shit about Jesus warning about judging others.

Ryan Adams - Shine Through The Dark

by Jay Allbritton
From Conan (h/t Stereogum).

You Really Got A Hold On Me

by Hector Diego

Lennon is singing lead with backup by Harrison. A truly great vocal, originally by Smokey Robinson. This song appeared on With The Beatles in England, but on The Beatles' Second Album in America, due to high crimes and misdemeanors by Capitalistic Records.

Tegan & Sara - Time After Time

by Jay Allbritton
I can't think of a more appropriate song for them to cover.

And Your Bird Can Sing

by Hector Diego

Lennon considered this song one of his more forgettable efforts. I can see "Eight Days A Week" or "Run For Your Life", but this song has one of the best guitar riffs in the business.

Queen - Under Pressure (w Annie Lennox, David Bowie)

by Jay Allbritton
Can't we give ourselves one more chance?

It's Janis Joplin meets Gracie Slick meets Patti Smith meets Jim Morrison as a woman.

Alabama Shakes - Hold On

Alabama Shakes, Gotye, and Wild Flag are bands that strike me as great new talent in 2012. I imagine that the Station Agent will be posting a list of his recommendations.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova - Falling Slowly

by Jay Allbritton
Wonderful song from the movie Once. (h/t Derek).

Paul Meets Nirvana

by Jay Allbritton
If you're going to get someone to fill in for the late Kurt Cobain playing with the surviving members of Nirvana, you better go big. So they got Paul. It's going down tonight at the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy relief benefit. Can we get Courtney and Yoko onstage for a rousing rendition of "All You Need is Love" into "All Apologies"? Do it!

The Year Of John Lennon- Come Together

We are continuing with The Year of John Lennon here at The Walrus Speaks. People have said the world is going to come to an end in 2012, so we have been posting Lennon so we could have a good soundtrack for that.

Beatles In Melbourne, 1964

Glen Hansard - This Gift (Brooklyn Youth Chorus)

by Jay Allbritton
My friends in South Florida saw this guy open for Eddie Vedder last week and they all like him a lot, so I'm investigating. This initial offering is quite promising.

The Helmets of Space

by Jay Allbritton
Finally, someone made a supercut of space helmets set to a mashup of Bowie's "Space Oddity" and The Beatles' "Elanor Rigby" (h/t Justin Yu of The 404). What took you people so long?

Incidentally, the person I hat-tipped above, Justin Yu, has a Tumblr featuring images of computer monitors in movies. Oh, and if you haven't listened to the daily podcast he does with Jeff Bakalar for CNET, you should, it's fun times.

Happy Rhodes - Come Undone

by Jay Allbritton
Even Roberto Duran thinks this is an admirable performance of this "Duran Duran" cover.

Branches - Eleanor Rigby (Beatles Cover)

by Jay Allbritton
Top notch Beatles cover for all the lonely people. Even you Father McKenzie.

Cheech And Chong - Dave's Not Here

by Hector Diego

I'm posting this in honor of the new, sensible cannabis laws in Colorado and Washington. Just a token to remind folks of how it used to be.

No, I'm Dave!

Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know

by Hector Diego

Don't let the two minutes of mumbling fool you, this dude can sing.

This song gets my nomination for the best song of 2012. And I am difficult to please. Ask the Station Agent. If a song doesn't have a melody that I remember note for note the first time I hear it, I never give it higher than a B-.

Branches - Crazy (Gnarls Barkley Cover)

by Jay Allbritton

Dave Brubeck (1920-2012)

by Hector Diego
I don't know Jack about jazz. But nearly everyone knows this melody by the legendary American artist Dave Brubeck. Goddess and God bless his soul.

Branches - Seven Nation Army (White Stripes cover)

by Jay Allbritton
Nice arrangement on this cover. This concludes my "Seven Nation Army" triple shot. A veritable 21 nation army. That could hold me back for sure.

Melanie Martinez - Seven Nation Army

by Jay Allbritton
Usually not a fan of these network TV talent contests, but I have seen Melanie Martinez a few times and I look forward to seeing what she can do after this show is over.

The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

by Jay Allbritton
I've got this song stuck in my head in a big bad way.

Jim Carrey - How Rich People Laugh

by Hector Diego
This guy kills me.

Seperate Incidents: Obama Honors Led Zeppelin; Page, White and Edge Jam

by Jay Allbritton
The president praised Led Zeppelin at the Kennedy Center Honors.

Several acts played Zep songs. Apparently Jack White was in the house. When I come across video of any of the performances I'll post them.

In the meantime, here's White jamming "Seven Nation Army" with Jimmy Page and The Edge.

John Lennon - Oh My Love

by Hector Diego

Here's a rather imperfect, but rather pretty, version that did not make it onto the album. 1971.
