Happy New Year, people.

2012 The Year Of John Lennon Ends

by Hector Diego

On January 1, 2012, I determined to post music by Lennon or featuring Lennon every day of the year, because people were saying that the world was going to end in 2012. I figured that if I played Lennon, either the world would not end or at least we would be hearing good music while it did. I managed to do this most days, and it has been a lot of fun.

Happy New Year, Walrus, wherever you are.

New Rilo Kiley Album?

by Jay Allbritton
On Facebook, 11 hours ago, Rilo Kiley posted this message:
Record is almost finished, and artwork is nearly done. Going to need your help! More to come
This would imply that a new album is coming not just some b-sides collection. While I want the b-sides collection very badly, a new album would be way better news, because that would likely mean an extensive tour was in the offing.

RK Album Watch 2012-13 begins now.

And what do they mean "need your help"? I would be happy to help. I'm a helpful person and this sounds important!

Russell Brand Interviews Members of the Westboro Baptist Church

by Jay Allbritton
If you have never heard of the Westboro Baptist Church, that's probably a good thing. They're super intolerant, you guys. They have recently threatened to protest the funerals of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre. As a result they now have problems with Anonymous that could carry on for awhile.

In this clip, two of members of the WBC stepped into the realm of Russell Brand. He patiently attempted to talk to them while they called him a pimp and explained why he and the audience all hated one another and were going to hell. It was pretty pointless. These people have nothing to say.

Obviously, the best thing to do is ignore them, which I have failed to do simply by making this post. It's also hard to ignore them when they go up to places where people are mourning the dead and they make a disturbance and try to start pushing people's buttons.

They also do not give a shit about Jesus warning about judging others.

Glen Hansard - This Gift (Brooklyn Youth Chorus)

by Jay Allbritton
My friends in South Florida saw this guy open for Eddie Vedder last week and they all like him a lot, so I'm investigating. This initial offering is quite promising.

The Helmets of Space

by Jay Allbritton
Finally, someone made a supercut of space helmets set to a mashup of Bowie's "Space Oddity" and The Beatles' "Elanor Rigby" (h/t Justin Yu of The 404). What took you people so long?

Incidentally, the person I hat-tipped above, Justin Yu, has a Tumblr featuring images of computer monitors in movies. Oh, and if you haven't listened to the daily podcast he does with Jeff Bakalar for CNET, you should, it's fun times.

Happy Rhodes - Come Undone

No, I'm Dave!

Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know

by Hector Diego

Don't let the two minutes of mumbling fool you, this dude can sing.

This song gets my nomination for the best song of 2012. And I am difficult to please. Ask the Station Agent. If a song doesn't have a melody that I remember note for note the first time I hear it, I never give it higher than a B-.

George Harrison - All Those Years Ago

by Hector Diego

Today's post for The Year Of John Lennon by George Harrison is poignant. Harrison had his own issues with Lennon, which he promptly forgot when Lennon was murdered.

We should appreciate the people we have while we have them, and I am sure Harrison, who left us on this day in 2001, would agree.

Night Terrors of 1927 - Watch the World Go Dark

by Jay Allbritton
Blake Sennett of The Elected and Rilo Kiley has a new band. Not much is known about them as of now, except it's a collaboration between Sennett and Jarrod Gorbel of The Honorary Title.

Not sure how I feel about this. I like the song more every time I listen. As a passionate fan of The Elected, I want to hear Sennett follow up on Bury Me in My Rings, his outstanding 2011 album. Still, I look forward to seeing how this plays out.

Give The Turkey A Reprieve!

by Hector Diego
It's some sort of buzzard, right?

You don't really want to eat this, do you? There's an alternative--tofu, the other white meat.

I've had a few versions of tofu turkey, and they all involve mashing the tofu and mixing it with other stuff. This recipe is quite different, you freeze the tofu and then deep fry it in spiced batter, then bake it with the gravy. It leaves the other tofu turkey recipes in the dust, in my opinion.

So just like I promised yesterday, here's the recipe for my wife's tofu turkey. As they say in India, it is "too good".

The Mama's Tofu Turkey

2 pounds tofu, thoroughly frozen (for a few days) --first, take it out of the packages and soak it several times in purified water, then place in a freezer container, tightly covered

batter
2 cups chick pea (garbanzo bean) flour
1 cup white or whole wheat flour
2 tsp salt
1 tbsp ground coriander
1 tbsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp powdered asafoetida (hing) you get it at a Chinese or Indian store
1/4 black or cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp turmeric

Mix together

Add water slowly and mix some more until you get the consistency of pancake batter, start with one cup and increase as needed

In a deep pot or wok, fill to 4-5 inches vegetable oil

Squeeze out water as much as you can from the tofu (remove from freezer several hours beforehand to thaw) as if it were a sponge, cut into half inch slabs

Dip each slab into the batter and fry on medium high heat until golden brown, set aside

Gravy

Heat 1/4 cup olive oil or ghee (clarified butter or butter oil, you can get it in an Indian store or make your own, just click around for instructions) in a stock pot. Add 1/4 tsp asafoetida, saute 1 cup diced carrots, 1/4 cup diced celery. When the vegetables have softened a little, add the following spices

1 tbsp poultry seasoning (never fear, it's vegetarian)
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp basil
1 tsp marjoram
1 tbsp sage (all of these are dry, not fresh, herbs)
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup soy sauce or Braggs

Add about 4 cups water and simmer 15 minutes. Then add 2 cups nuts--whatever kind you have. Let cool overnight if possible (give it a least a few hours), then blend in blender

Arrange tofu in lasagna type pan and cover with the gravy

Bake at 350 until bubbly

Then you serve it with everything else, the stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc. Like real turkey, this stuff will knock you out, so settle in to watch football or something.

You should be proud of yourself. You have given a turkey a reprieve and given thanks to God and creation at the same time. Why should the President have the wonderful experience of pardoning a turkey, but not you? And had an innocent Thanksgiving meal.

Nowhere Man

I think it is safe to say that most people who visit The Walrus Speaks are not conservative, either fiscally or socially. So I am asking our American friends to vote today, otherwise you might be a...nowhere man or woman.

Sometimes you have to be a pragmatist. You can't expect to fight a war with the army you want. You have to fight with the army you have.

Eisenhower, although a Republican, was a fairly good President. He warned us about...

1. The military-industrial complex.

So why are today's Republicans trying to give the U.S. military more funding than they have asked for?

Nowhere Man

by Hector Diego

Lennon got tired of writing songs about boy-girl love, and decided to get real. By and large, the better lyrics we might hear today are a legacy of the Beatles and the 1960s. Before that, it was strictly bubblegum.

Senator George McGovern 1922 - 2012

by Hector Diego

Senator George McGovern died today at the age of 90. McGovern, who was a decorated pilot during WWII, and whose experiences in that war made him anti-war, was the man who should have been President. Unless you think Nixon was a better choice.

"I think it was my study of history that convinced me that the Democratic Party was more on the side of the average American," he said.

Mendoza Line - 31 Candles

by Jay Allbritton
Break up songs come in all shapes and sizes. This one is the prototype for the angry break up song. The way I understand it, in real life the guitar player is one doing the breaking up, the singer is the one who was broken up with. Both bring a great deal of pathos to the song. It's a real barn burner.

John Lennon - Mind Games

by Hector Diego

Lennon fully acknowledged that you need more than love (although without love, you are not getting anywhere). Peace and love, however, were themes that he returned to again and again:

Pushing barriers, planting seeds
Playing the mind guerrilla
Chanting the mantra--
Peace on Earth

It looks like he was right the first time. All you need is love.

Election Year Cannabis Nonsense

by Hector Diego
Romney says that if elected, he would fight the legalization of marijuana "tooth and nail."

Here is the President's statement on the issue.

Both men talk nonsense on this issue, but Romney's views are far worse, probably because they reflect his real opinion. Marijuana is a gateway drug to harder drugs, etc. One might wonder what the gateway drug for marijuana is...alcohol, perhaps? Obama says nothing about gateway drugs, and he wants to treat it as a public health issue instead of a criminal issue. OK, that's fine, but then he starts talking about drug treatment programs, and creating less demand. I was hoping the interviewer would say something like, "Why is less demand important?" Well, it must be intimidating to be sitting across from the POTUS.

It is true that Obama's administration has hassled marijuana dispensaries even more than the Bush administration ever did, and far more than you would think he would have to go to convince the guns and religion people to vote for him, who haven't been talking a whole lot about legalizing marijuana. Far more. It's not a big issue with them either way! So what is up with that?

However, if cannabis laws are important to you as a voter, which one are you going to pick? The tooth and nail guy, or the black guy who got elected President, and now, for those undecideds who just don't get it, he feels he must appear to be "more French than the King"?

I'm taking the black guy.

by Jay Allbritton
The return of Soundgarden has motivated me to reflect a bit on their career and believe it or not, this band was further ahead of their time than I thought. This track is from Superunknown, but their entire catalog, especially their work from 1991-1996, consists of interesting, dynamic, well produced songs that hold up a lot better than I expected.

John Lennon - Woman

by Hector Diego

Lennon was one of the first males to describe himself as a feminist. According to Webster's New World Dictionary, 1970, feminism is:

1. a) the principle that women should have political, economic, and social rights equal to those of men.

Are you a feminist?
