Mason Williams - Classical Gas

The Station Agent's post of John Fahey inspired me. So here is a truly great live performance by Mason Williams and friends.

Patrice O' Neal (1969-2011)

Oasis--Don't Look Back In Anger

by Jay Allbritton
I like this band's music, at least I like the songs that I heard plastered all over the radio in the 90's. But the band's image is so unlikeable that I don't bother with them. Seems they don't even like each other much.

In their favor, they do have a heavy Beatles influence.

At any rate, this is a fabulous rendition of their song, "Don't Look Back in Anger," which is fine advice.

Scott McKenzie - San Francisco

by Hector Diego

Why am I not bothered by the commercialization of hippies, flower power, and the romanticism of "the Summer of Love" in San Francisco, 1967? I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it has something to do with the redemption of commercialization. It is so patently stupid. So if something like what happened in "the City" in 1967 had a wide, popular appeal, it's fine with me, because it was nowhere near as stupid as the narrow spirit that opposed it. I know that thousands of kids went there and lived in poverty and filth in Golden Gate Park. Some took heroin. They were all escaping from their parents and some from college. Many of that generation were interested only in sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Etc. But when the smoke clears it is obvious that there was much more good than bad. Would you really want to return to the days before the Haight-Ashbury hype?

If you do, chances are you vote Republican.

Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again, Naturally

by Hector Diego

The Station Agent claims that a song by Elliot Smith is the saddest song ever written. I disagree. This is the saddest song ever written.

Quicksilver Messenger Service - Fire Brothers

by Hector Diego

Dreamy.

Come Together

by Hector Diego

It sounds like "shooka" but that's because Lennon had sung "shoot me." After the song was recorded someone pointed out that this was not a good idea, so the "me" was edited out. The "ka" sound is Ringo doing his Ringo thing. This is a sad story, isn't it?

Shooka.

Cyanide And Happiness - The Sign

I just discovered Cyanide and Happiness. Now I am going to have to exercise all of my self-control--which isn't much--to avoid rotting my brain to the core. Because these little videos are like potato chips. You can't have just one.

by Jay Allbritton
Covering Steely Dan to great affect.

America--Tin Man

by Jay Allbritton
Someone mentioned this song the other day and it has been stuck in my head ever since. Perhaps because the central theme of the song's lyrics--the fact that faith in self and others comes from within--resonates with the central conflict at work in my own life currently.

That has to be it because it's a real crap song.

Also, you would think that America would have to be the hardest band to google. Not so. They have the top spot despite the fact that America is the name of everything in the entire hemisphere.

An Innocent Thanksgiving Dinner

by Hector Diego
It's some sort of buzzard, right?

You don't really want to eat this, do you? There's an alternative--tofu, the other white meat.

I've had a few versions of tofu turkey, and they all involve mashing the tofu and mixing it with other stuff. This recipe is quite different, you freeze the tofu and then deep fry it in spiced batter, then bake it with the gravy. It leaves the other tofu turkey recipes in the dust, in my opinion.

So just like I promised yesterday, here's the recipe for my wife's tofu turkey. As they say in India, it is "too good".

The Mama's Tofu Turkey

2 pounds tofu, thoroughly frozen (for a few days) --first, take it out of the packages and soak it several times in purified water, then place in a freezer container, tightly covered

batter
2 cups chick pea (garbanzo bean) flour
1 cup white or whole wheat flour
2 tsp salt
1 tbsp ground coriander
1 tbsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp powdered asafoetida (hing) you get it at a Chinese or Indian store
1/4 black or cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp turmeric

Mix together

Add water slowly and mix some more until you get the consistency of pancake batter, start with one cup and increase as needed

In a deep pot or wok, fill to 4-5 inches vegetable oil

Squeeze out water as much as you can from the tofu (remove from freezer several hours beforehand to thaw) as if it were a sponge, cut into half inch slabs

Dip each slab into the batter and fry on medium high heat until golden brown, set aside

Gravy

Heat 1/4 cup olive oil or ghee (clarified butter or butter oil, you can get it in an Indian store or make your own, just click around for instructions) in a stock pot. Add 1/4 tsp asafoetida, saute 1 cup diced carrots, 1/4 cup diced celery. When the vegetables have softened a little, add the following spices

1 tbsp poultry seasoning (never fear, it's vegetarian)
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp basil
1 tsp marjoram
1 tbsp sage (all of these are dry, not fresh, herbs)
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup soy sauce or Braggs

Add about 4 cups water and simmer 15 minutes. Then add 2 cups nuts--whatever kind you have. Let cool overnight if possible (give it a least a few hours), then blend in blender

Arrange tofu in lasagna type pan and cover with the gravy

Bake at 350 until bubbly

Then you serve it with everything else, the stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc. Like real turkey, this stuff will knock you out, so settle in to watch football or something.

You should be proud of yourself. You have given a turkey a reprieve and given thanks to God and creation at the same time. And had an innocent Thanksgiving meal.

M83--Midnight City

by Jay Allbritton
From Fallon last night. No idea what to make of this performance. Let's put it this way, it's a long, slow build to a fierce jam. This band is willing to be extremely snyth-y and I have an aversion to that sort of thing. Their lyrics are a bit too repetitive in this song, but the layered vocals are so sweet that I will bear the electro overkill. I didn't enjoy watching it... until the end, which packs a real punch. This band seems like they could grow on a more patient listener.

New Old Elliot Smith Song, "Misery Let Me Down," Surfaces

by Jay Allbritton
Current Washington Post blogger and former DJ at University of Maryland's student run station WMUC-FM David Malitz tells the tale of how a lost recording of Elliott Smith performing the heretofore unheard "Misery Let Me Down" recently came to light. You can hear the song there and you can download it over at Sweet Adrenaline.

On the recording you can hear Smith explain that he wants to play a warm-up song. After about two-minutes, Smith stops playing abruptly, presumably because he's warm. So, in reality this is just a fragment of a song, but it's quite good.

Smith's most famous song, "Miss Misery," led Smith to a level of fame he never courted. Though "Misery Let Me Down" was performed at WMUC and left behind the year before "Miss Misery" landed on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, it might feel like a sad lament from beyond the grave, if one didn't know better.

In this post-Good Will Hunting interview, Smith explains why he rarely played "Miss Misery" live.

Tokyo Police Club and Ted Leo Cover "Since U Been Gone"

Back in summer, Tokyo Police club covered the first decade of the 21st century, by covering one song per day for ten days. This is their take on Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone."

Since U Been Gone by Tokyo Police Club on Grooveshark

While I'm generally not a fan of Clarkson's brand of all out pop, TPC is at least the second act to scrape some polish off "Since U Been Gone" with terrific results. The great Ted Leo bent it into a sweet medley with Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps".

Elliott Smith--A Living Will

by Jay Allbritton
Gil Reyes, The director of the documentary Searching for Elliott Smith, spoke to Logan Crow of the Long Beach Cinematheque back in May. The documentary has been screening since 2009, but has yet to become widely available, much to my chagrin. Also, chagrin is a hard word to use in a non-comedic context.

This is "A Living Will," a song that very clearly reflects the struggle that life becomes to victims of depression.

John Lennon - Instant Karma

by Hector Diego

The Station Agent and I had a very interesting conversation yesterday about karma, reincarnation, and all sorts of stuff we really don't understand. But who does? Let's boil these issues down and make it simple. When we do that, differences between religions disappear and there is better communication. Well, some important differences anyway. Check this out.

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered 'Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.'

Right. Now lets hear from John Lennon.
