Auld Lang Syne

by Hector Diego

Willow Smith, Jimmy Fallon, Neil Young, And The Boss - Whip My Hair

by Hector Diego

If you can survive Smith's inane crap, you are well prepared to hear Jimmy Fallon/Neil Young--or whoever he is--team up with Bruce Springsteen to perform "Whip My Hair." What is this world coming to, I ask?

I'm posting this especially for my good friend Mimi Pond, the noted graphic illustrator and novelist out in Hell A, California, who happens to be married to the artist Wayne White. Mimi developed an aversion to Young's music as a teen because her brother, let's just say, had an attitude that made it difficult for his favorite artists to be appreciated by his sister. So here is my attempt to heal the Pond-Young rift once and for all.

But for all I know, Mimi had lunch with Fallon the other day. She's so much more urbane than me and I know it. Anyway, this is me trying.

Cee Lo Tells It Like It Is

by Hector Diego

I have said time and again that this is a family blog, and therefore we do not post erotica. However, rough language and plain nudity are not verboten in my household, at least when we are watching a video or something. So I present to you Cee Lo's excellent "Fuck You", Motown for the the 21st century.

It's good stuff.

Jenny and Johnny--Big Wave

Rolling Stones - Sittin' On A Fence

by Hector Diego

Half of their songs sound like they were meant for drinking one's troubles away. Jagger and Richards wrote this song in 1965, but it was not released in the US until 1967.

Comfortable Couch

We got so many hits from people interested in the Comfortable Couch that I feel we must include it here, on Boxing Day. What in hell is Boxing Day, you say? You must be an American, matey.

Aaron Neville - Ave Maria

by Hector Diego

I'm not much into Christmas carols, so the ones I like must be classic. This one is from the fantastic but true story film Alive, in which survivors of a plane crash in the Andes come to terms with life and death by eating human flesh. It is truly a beautiful film.

Merry Christmas.

Bill Murray's Annual Winter Forecast

by Jay Allbritton
"I'll give you a winter prediction. It's gonna be cold... it's gonna be gray... and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life."

Happy Winter, from The Walrus Speaks!

Tori Amos--Winter

by Jay Allbritton
I'm celebrating the first day of winter, because I like it cold. In fact, I scheduled this post in the middle of the summer. July 23rd, actually. I hope things are going well for me in the not-too-distant future. Did the Florida Gators have an unbeaten season? That would be a heck of an accomplishment. I wonder how the new look Miami Heat are faring? Did I ever finish that novel I wanted to wrap up in August? So many questions. Is the oil spill cleaned up yet? Did the Democrats lose Congress? Holy crap, maybe John Boehner is about to become Speaker of the House. Who can say?

Only the winter, my friend. Only the winter.

Grateful Dead - Ripple

by Hector Diego

Certainly one of the most beloved of Dead songs. I post lyrics rarely, but this one warrants it.

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near, as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of man

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall, you fall alone
If you should stand, then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way, I would take you home

Marijuana Report

by Hector Diego

Here is something I copied from Yahoo News. Read it, and I'll comment below.

Some U.S. varieties reach upwards of 30 percent THC, while Mexican pot averages between 3 and 4 percent, said Tommy Lanier, who directs the National Marijuana Initiative, funded by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Lanier questions the medical value of such strong marijuana and said legitimate crops can be diverted to the black market. "They say its used for pain management, but drinking a bottle of Jack Daniels would have the same effect," he said.

OK, so Lanier is either stupid or cynical. Perhaps both. At the very least, the guy can't see that one benefit of stronger herb is that you can smoke less of it, saving your lungs from unnecessary irritation?

But this business about Jack Daniels is the real kicker. Even if Jack Daniels--probably a drug that Lanier uses--had the same pain killing results as marijuana, what about the other ways in which it effects people that marijuana does not? Such as making anyone driving drunk very dangerous to meet on the freeway? Cirrhosis of the liver? Broken families? When will this country see that legal alcohol is absurdly ironic if marijuana is illegal?

Why is my country so STUPID?

OK, so the poor have their karma, and we have ours. But everything we do makes more karma. So, what will we do? Elect more conservatives who don't care a damn about the poor and homeless? I wouldn't want to have that on my karmic record.

President Sarah Palin

by Hector Diego

Don't think it can't happen. Richard Nixon came back from the political grave to become President. And who thought Ronald Reagan, a B movie actor, would become the POTUS? So if you think Sarah Palin would screw this country up royally, get involved. Make sure she does not get any further than she already has.

Otherwise, you know the deal--this country is toast.

John Lennon - Mother

by Hector Diego

Lennon tells the stark truth.

All You Need Is Love

by Hector Diego

Continuing our John Lennon Day here at The Walrus Speaks with one of his greatest songs. Give yourself a big hug, and start with loving your self!

Strawberry Fields Forever

by Hector Diego

"Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see." Indeed.

Another of my favorite Lennon songs.

Paul McCartney - Here Today

by Hector Diego

Today is a good day to post "Here Today", Paul's tribute to John, who was assassinated on this day thirty years ago. The song is certainly one of the best of Paul's post-Beatle career. Some of you blame Paul for the break up of the Beatles, which is a fable easily dismissed. But let me just ask you this--do you love John Lennon more than Paul McCartney does?

I didn't think so.

The Beatles--Across the Universe

From 2003 and oddly electric. Digging it.

LSD At Columbia

by Hector Diego

I'm now too old for this sugar cube--but that's just me!

Forty-three years after the Summer of Love, some things never change. A group of students at prestigous Columbia University in New York City were recently busted for selling acid to undercover narcs. What really kills me is that the fraternity of one of the accused--Psi Upsilon--wonders whether the chapter at Columbia should be revoked. This from a fraternity, which are notorious for drunken parties! Please.

Can anyone actually point to the harm done by people taking LSD? At The Walrus Speaks, we never advocate the use of any mind altering substances. But we recognize that the current policies are ridiculous.

Why is our country so stupid?

Read the article.
