Beatles LP Countdown - Maggie Mae

by Hector Diego

Here are the Beatles at their irreverent best doing a traditional song about a Liverpool hooker, who will "never walk down Lime Street anymore." It sounds like the skiffle style of music that was popular when they were teenagers. They went way beyond this stage, but the British Isles folk genre was always there in their foundations.

Two pounds ten a week was their pay.

And here's a longer, outtake version.

Regina Spektor--Time Is All Around

by Jay Allbritton
Time is all around
Except inside my clock
Everyone is waiting for their lover to unlock
Leaves become most beautiful
When they're about to die
When they're about to fall from trees
When they're about to dry up

Kashmiri Pandits Terrorized By Islamists

by Hector Diego

The reason I am posting this video is because of this Yahoo article. I have seen many articles about the plight of Muslims in Kashmir, but I have never seen one about the Kashmiri Pandits, who are Hindu, in ordinary media outlets. Why?

WHY?

At the end of the video posted above, it is stated that India journalists of both the right and the left have not spoken out about the oppression of Hindus in Kashmir. And I wonder why...

The Injustice League--I'll Never Be Lost Again

by Jay Allbritton
I watched the epilogue of Lost last night, and it was a fairly well done excuse to squeeze a few more answers out of the writers. The epilogue can be found on disc-5 of the season 6 set, which was released earlier this week.

The epilogue got me going, and the special features sucked me in. By the time I exhausted all of the material on the disc, I was feeling extremely nostalgic for the show, so I went online and started reading other people's opinions about the epilogue, which quickly led to the discovery of this gem:

"We gotta go back, Kate!" Oh, sorry. I Lost my composure there.

I Don't Know How To Love Him

by Hector Diego

You write a song like this, you can die immediately and go straight to heaven. Because you didn't write the song--God wrote it, and you were the instrument. I would also say that this recording fulfilled the life purpose of the vocalist, Yvonne Elliman.

Thanks to the Station Agent posting this awhile back. It's great stuff.

Neil Young - Lotta Love

by Hector Diego

This is an achingly beautiful song. Perhaps because love can be achingly beautiful. And no one beats Neil Young when it comes to describing the most important things in life.

Happy to see that the University of Florida's annual pep rally for homecoming, Gator Growl, will be headlined by the hilarious Aziz Ansari.

Beatles LP Countdown - For You Blue

by Hector Diego

"For You Blue" is not my favorite Harrison melody, but it is a strong one. Very distinctive. Check out Lennon on slide guitar--I had presumed it was Harrison. I had also thought that it was Harrison on piano. It seems that Lennon and McCartney grokked Harrison's style and imitated him on slide and piano.

1969.

Bobby Vinton - You Are My Special Angel

by Hector Diego

I just watched the episode of Mad Men that ends with the fascinatingly beautiful January Jones shooting a pellet gun or whatever it is at her neighbor's pigeons, accompanied by "You Are My Special Angel," with, of course, the stupid ubiquitous cigarette. What does it all mean?

1963.

Jenny Lewis--You Are What You Love

If you want a friend Feed any animal...
There was so much space I cut me a piece
With some fine wine It brought peace to my mind
In the summertime... And it rolled

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

by Hector Diego
I intend to keep mentioning the Vietnam War here. John's legend, as huge as it was before he protested this war, doubled in size when he went on his heroic crusade against the war. How do like that choice of words. To define John fully, we must define 'nam.

This is a moving clip juxtaposing images from the Vietnam War with Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?"

PS: I discovered this one in our back files, way back in August 2006. The Station Agent is still protesting the Viet Nam war! Right on!

Devendra Banhart--Summertime

by Jay Allbritton
Summertime, and the living's easy...

Tool--46 and 2

by Jay Allbritton
I wanna feel the change consume me,
Feel the outside turning in.
I wanna feel the metamorphosis and
Cleansing I've endured in...
My shadow. My shadow.
Change is coming now is my time.
Listen to my muscle memory,
Contemplate what I've been clinging to,
Are Forty-Six & 2 ahead of me?

I'm On The Bull's Side!

by Hector Diego

I am glad no one was killed at this stupid event, which was not really a bullfight, but is first cousin to that demonic practice. So good, no one killed.

But I'm on the bulls' side. This particular bull just decided he should get even. Let's face it, a bullfight is not really a fight. It is a cruel and unusual punishment for a bovine, just so humans can enjoy violence. Actually, these staged events are quite inhuman. They do not enhance our humanity, they degrade it. Spain should be ashamed of this tradition. Maybe it is not the biggest problem in the world, but it is certainly a tragedy that can be stopped. It's bullshit.

Read the article.

PS: I read a few pages of comments on this, and not one person had a high opinion of bullfighting. Where do you stand?

Bob And Jimi - All Along The Watchtower

by Hector Diego

I guess the answer to the question on the cover of the Jehovah Witness magazine depends upon your definition of religion. What most of us would call religion is sometimes practiced by people who deny any connection with "religion!" Those other people--deluded--they are doing religion, not us. Because of course religion is the problem. In the politics of representation, it is critical to define terms and get others to define them similarly.

Anyway, the hour is definitely getting late.

Cops Harass Videotapers

by Hector Diego
The video that started it all...

This is why law enforcement cannot be trusted. You could get falsely arrested for videotaping them? How patently, cynically, illegal! We need immediate legislation that specifically states that videotaping cops is legal, and that infringing upon this sacred right will cost a cop his job. Go ahead and give them raises, though, because they are doing a dangerous job. But hold them to the Constitution. Otherwise, what kind of country are we living in?
