The innocent diet
Or at least, that's what this Wall Street trader claims. He says his boss fired him because he wouldn't eat steak and was therefore gay. This is an example of foodism, sexism, and homophobia rolled into one.
Anti-vegetarian fanatics have tried to equate vegetarianism with femininity. Tell that to a male (more or less) vegetarian gorilla. And why should femininity or gayness be an insult?
I don't know if the guy has a viable law suit, but I would love to see him win. I can vouch for his experience. Before my most recent gig in academia, which is quite vegetarian friendly, I sometimes hid my dietary orientation in previous jobs because I realized there were disadvantages to "coming out." Not only is it merely awkward at company dinners and the like, some people are positively antagonistic to vegetarianism. My own brother is that way, so I am sure someone's boss may take umbrage and discriminate. And yes, I did get flak when I came out.
I really hope the trader wins his suit!
