
Belafonte, and yes, Charlton Heston, were early supporters of the civil rights movement. Belafonte has remained an activist for all kinds of humanitarian stuff. The spirit of Paul Robeson lives in him.
Just a bit of trivia, Bob Dylan made his first recording playing harmonica for Belafonte.
You don't have to have daughters to appreciate the sentiments in this song, sappy as it is. The whole world is just like this song. Nothing lasts, and yet everything remains the same.
